Joel R. Rainwater, MD
Dr. Joel Rainwater is the Medical Director at Advanced Vein Institute of Arizona. A graduate of renowned University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Rainwater completed an internship in the Parkland Health & Hospital System at the UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and returned to Texas to complete a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.
In 1997, Dr. Rainwater joined the oldest and largest professional group in Arizona, based at Desert Samaritan Hospital (now Banner Desert Medical Center and Cardon’s Children’s Medical Center) and subsequently became the group’s youngest-ever president. While there, he developed the Interventional Oncology and Endovascular programs for the Centers. By 2012, the Liver Cancer Treatment Program at Banner Desert Medical Center had the highest volume of patients and successful outcomes in the entire Southwest.
Highly regarded as the doctor’s doctor, Dr. Rainwater has proctored and trained 54 physicians in radioembolization of liver tumors and has assisted in opening 24 hospital Y90 microsphere radioembolization programs from Ohio to Hawaii. His passion for multidisciplinary collaboration has become the template for endovascular advisory committees such as the one at Banner Desert Medical Center.
Dr. Rainwater formed the Apex Medical Specialists, which has an annual growth rate of 500%, a multispecialty group developed to aligned patient care. He is also the founder of Comprehensive Interventional Care Centers (CiC), the largest clinically-oriented outpatient vascular practice in Arizona and the entire Southwest region of the United States. He has performed over 10,000 angiography-based procedures and 2,500 limb-salvage procedures.
For many years, Phoenix Magazine has recognized Dr. Rainwater as a “Top Doc” in Arizona. He has dedicated his career to helping patients by providing precise, targeted and minimally-invasive approaches to both diagnosis and treatment. He works closely and collaboratively with Advanced Vein Institute of Arizona to provide a spectrum of peripheral vascular disease interventions. His proven approach reduces patient risk and pain while significantly reducing recovery times.
